Ideological Bias (Seeing Through Political Lens)

The systematic distortion of evidence evaluation based on political or ideological commitments—where people accept evidence that supports their ideology and reject evidence that challenges it, regardless of the evidence's quality. Liberals and conservatives shown identical data about gun control or climate change draw opposite conclusions—not because the data is ambiguous but because ideology filters evaluation. Ideological bias operates through motivated reasoning: the brain treats ideologically threatening evidence as a threat to be defended against rather than information to be evaluated. The result: smarter, more informed people can be MORE ideologically biased because they're better at constructing rationalizations.

When to use it

When evidence evaluation seems to divide cleanly along political lines; when smart people reach opposite conclusions from the same data; when organizational decisions are being influenced by unstated ideological commitments; when intellectual honesty requires evaluating claims independently of their political associations.

How it can help

Test for ideological bias by checking whether your evidence evaluation reverses when the political valence reverses. Would you accept this evidence if it supported the other side's position? Would you scrutinize it as carefully if it supported your own? The practice: seek out the strongest arguments from people you ideologically disagree with—not strawmen but the steelmanned version. If you can't articulate the other side's best argument, ideological bias is likely distorting your evaluation. In organizations: depoliticize decisions by evaluating evidence without revealing which 'side' it supports.
