Influence of Stress (Including Breaking Points)
The comprehensive model of how stress affects cognitive function, decision quality, and behavior across a spectrum from optimal arousal to complete breakdown. Moderate stress enhances performance (Yerkes-Dodson law: arousal improves performance up to an optimal point). Beyond that point, stress progressively narrows attention (tunnel vision), degrades working memory, triggers habitual rather than deliberate responses, and ultimately produces cognitive shutdown or panic. Under extreme stress, people revert to their most deeply trained behaviors—which is why military training drills fundamentals until they're automatic, and why untrained people freeze.

When designing decision processes for high-stakes or time-pressured situations; when performance degrades under pressure despite adequate skill; when crisis response planning needs to account for cognitive degradation; when evaluating whether decision frameworks are stress-resilient.
How it can help
Design for stress at three levels: (1) Routine decisions: maintain moderate stress/challenge (flow zone) for optimal performance. (2) High-stakes decisions: build decision protocols that function UNDER stress—simple, practiced, automatic. Complex analytical processes break down under stress; simple heuristics survive. (3) Crisis decisions: pre-make decisions through if-then planning before the crisis (when cognitive capacity is full), and drill the responses until they're automatic. The most important insight: the time to build your crisis response is before the crisis, because during the crisis your cognitive capacity will be degraded.
