Liking Bias (Tendency to Agree with People We Like)

The systematic tendency to evaluate ideas, proposals, and arguments more favorably when they come from people we like—and more critically when they come from people we dislike. Liking bias operates through multiple channels: we pay more attention to liked sources, interpret their statements more charitably, remember their arguments better, and feel more social pressure to agree. In organizations: charismatic leaders get their ideas accepted faster regardless of quality; disliked colleagues get their ideas scrutinized harder regardless of merit. The bias means that WHO proposes an idea affects its evaluation as much as or more than the idea itself.

When to use it

When ideas from popular team members are accepted too quickly and ideas from less-liked members are dismissed too quickly; when evaluation quality needs to be independent of interpersonal dynamics; when building decision processes that need to be source-blind; when charisma is consistently winning over substance.

How it can help

Separate the source from the content in evaluations. Practices: (1) Evaluate proposals in writing without author attribution when possible. (2) When evaluating ideas from liked or disliked sources, explicitly ask 'would I evaluate this differently if it came from someone I felt differently about?' (3) Devil's advocate protocols that evaluate ideas on merit regardless of source. (4) Diverse hiring panels that reduce the influence of any individual's liking biases. The most important practice: notice when your evaluation of an idea shifts based on learning who proposed it—that shift is the liking bias in action.
