Mere Association
The tendency to connect two things simply because they occur together, regardless of any causal relationship. Pavlov's dogs salivated at a bell because it was associated with food—not because the bell caused food. In business, we associate brand with quality, messenger with message, correlation with causation. Advertisers exploit this by pairing products with attractive people, success stories, or positive emotions.
When to use it
When evaluating people (are you judging them by their associations?). When designing marketing (what do you want associated with your brand?). When a message seems more or less credible based on who delivers it.
How it can help
Reveals how much of our evaluation of people, products, and ideas is driven by arbitrary associations rather than substance. Helps design better branding and marketing. Also helps resist manipulation—recognize when you're being influenced by association rather than evidence.
