Physics Envy (Precision in Imprecise Domains)
The tendency of social sciences, business, and other complex domains to import the precision, mathematical formalism, and deterministic models of physics—even when the underlying phenomena don't support that level of precision. Economics uses equations that look like physics but describe systems that are fundamentally different (reflexive, adaptive, socially constructed). Business uses financial models with decimal-point precision for forecasts that are barely directionally correct. Physics envy produces false confidence: the mathematical formalism creates an illusion of rigor that masks the genuine uncertainty underneath.
When to use it
When precision in models or forecasts creates false confidence; when mathematical formalism is being applied to domains that don't support it; when stakeholders mistake precision for accuracy; when designing analytical frameworks that need to honestly represent uncertainty.
How it can help
Match your analytical precision to the precision your domain actually supports. Financial projections to the dollar for a startup? Physics envy. Market size estimates to three decimal places? Physics envy. The test: does adding precision increase accuracy, or just increase the appearance of accuracy? In genuinely uncertain domains (strategy, human behavior, markets), ranges and scenarios are more honest than point estimates. Report 'revenue will be between $2M and $5M' rather than '$3.47M'—the range is more accurate even though it feels less precise.
