Present Bias

The systematic preference for immediate rewards over future rewards, beyond what any constant discount rate would explain—closely related to hyperbolic discounting but emphasizing the behavioral consequences. Present bias manifests as the gap between what your 'planning self' intends and what your 'experiencing self' does. You plan to save, exercise, and eat well (planning self), then spend, skip the gym, and order takeout (experiencing self). Present bias is not weakness—it's a well-documented cognitive architecture where immediate sensory experience carries more psychological weight than abstract future projections. Every commitment device, automatic enrollment, and deadline exists because of present bias.

When to use it

When plans consistently aren't followed through; when desired behaviors require overcoming immediate discomfort for future benefit; when designing products, programs, or environments that need to shape behavior; when the gap between intention and action is the primary problem.

How it can help

Design your life and business to account for present bias rather than fighting it with willpower. Automatic systems: automatic savings, automatic bill payment, automatic scheduling. Commitment devices: pre-commitments that make future-self's preferred action the default (signing up for classes, paying in advance, public commitments). Environmental design: make the desired behavior easy and immediate and the undesired behavior difficult and delayed. For customers: reduce friction in the desired action to near-zero and increase friction in the undesired action. Present bias means the EASIEST action will be taken—so make the right action easiest.
