Priming

The psychological phenomenon where exposure to a stimulus influences subsequent judgment and behavior—often without conscious awareness. Seeing the word 'old' makes people walk slower. Reading about achievement makes people try harder on subsequent tasks. Exposure to money-related concepts makes people more self-reliant and less helpful. Priming operates below consciousness: the primed person doesn't know they've been influenced and sincerely believes their subsequent behavior is freely chosen. Every environment, communication, and experience is priming future behavior.

When to use it

When designing environments, communications, or rituals that shape subsequent behavior; when subtle cues may be undermining desired outcomes; when preparing for important activities and want to set the right mindset; when analyzing why behavior patterns emerge in specific environments.

How it can help

Design your environments, communications, and rituals to prime the behaviors you want. Office design primes collaboration or isolation. Meeting openings prime creative or analytical thinking. Language choices prime competitive or cooperative behavior. The practical application: before important activities, expose yourself and your team to priming stimuli aligned with the desired mindset. Before creative work: expose to diverse stimuli, art, or nature. Before analytical work: expose to structure, data, and precision. Before negotiations: expose to collaborative outcomes and mutual benefit.
