Propinquity Effect (Proximity Breeds Connection)
The robust finding that physical proximity is one of the strongest predictors of relationship formation—people form friendships, partnerships, and romantic relationships disproportionately with those they encounter frequently through physical closeness. Students assigned to adjacent dorm rooms become friends. Employees on the same floor collaborate more than those on different floors. Even within the same room, seating proximity predicts relationship formation. The mechanism: proximity creates repeated exposure (mere exposure effect), opportunities for interaction, and low-cost relationship maintenance. In the remote work era, propinquity effects explain both the power of co-location and the relationship cost of distributed teams.
When to use it
When collaboration between groups needs improvement (physical proximity may be the simplest intervention); when remote work is eroding relationships that proximity used to maintain; when designing office layouts for collaboration; when important relationships need proximity investment.
How it can help
Design physical environments to create the proximity you want. Place teams that need to collaborate in adjacent spaces. Locate break rooms and common areas where cross-functional encounters will occur naturally. For personal relationships: proximity requires deliberate investment when it's not automatic—schedule regular in-person time with important relationships that don't have built-in proximity. For remote teams: create digital propinquity through persistent shared channels, regular video interactions, and periodic in-person gatherings.
