Recognition Heuristic

Gigerenzer's finding that when choosing between two options—one recognized and one not—people (and organisms) infer that the recognized option scores higher on the criterion of interest. Which city is larger: San Antonio or San Diego? Most people correctly pick San Diego simply because they've heard of it more—and this heuristic is surprisingly accurate because recognition correlates with real-world importance in many domains. The recognition heuristic is one of the 'fast and frugal' heuristics that perform remarkably well in the right environments while requiring minimal information.

When to use it

When quick judgments are needed and recognition is available as a cue; when evaluating whether recognition-based shortcuts are appropriate for the specific decision domain; when marketing strategy aims to leverage recognition heuristic; when the correlation between recognition and quality needs to be assessed.

How it can help

Use the recognition heuristic consciously in the domains where it works (popularity, importance, market size—where recognition correlates with the criterion) and override it in domains where it doesn't (quality, value, innovation—where recognition may correlate with marketing spend rather than worth). In investing: the most recognized companies aren't necessarily the best investments (recognition correlates with size but not with return). In hiring: the most recognized candidates (prestigious schools, famous employers) aren't necessarily the best hires. The practice: note when recognition is driving your choice and ask whether recognition correlates with quality in THIS specific domain.
