Kahneman's dual-process framework: System 1 is fast, automatic, intuitive, emotional, and effortless—it generates impressions, feelings, and quick judgments without conscious effort. System 2 is slow, deliberate, analytical, and effortful—it handles complex calculations, logical reasoning, and careful evaluation. System 1 runs constantly and handles 95%+ of daily cognition; System 2 is lazy and engages only when System 1 signals difficulty. Most cognitive biases occur because System 1 produces a quick, plausible answer and System 2 doesn't bother to check it. Understanding this dual architecture is the foundation of all cognitive bias awareness.

When to use it

Always—this is the meta-framework for understanding when to trust intuition and when to override it. Specifically: when decisions feel obvious but stakes are high; when evaluating whether expert intuition is reliable (it is when trained on high-validity, high-feedback environments); when designing decision processes that need to balance speed and accuracy.

How it can help

For routine decisions: trust System 1—it's efficient and usually correct for familiar situations. For important, novel, or high-stakes decisions: deliberately engage System 2 by slowing down, writing out your reasoning, considering alternatives, and checking for known biases. The practical trigger: whenever a conclusion feels immediately obvious for an important decision, that's System 1 delivering a judgment that System 2 hasn't verified. Pause. Write down why you believe what you believe. Consider the opposite. This forced engagement of System 2 catches errors that System 1's speed creates.
