Tribalism

The deep human tendency to divide the world into in-groups and out-groups, then favor the in-group and demonize the out-group—often based on minimal or arbitrary distinctions. Tajfel's minimal group experiments showed that people discriminate in favor of their group even when group assignment is random and meaningless. Tribalism is the default human social operating system: it creates solidarity, cooperation, and identity within the tribe while generating prejudice, conflict, and zero-sum thinking between tribes. Every organization, market, and community operates within tribal dynamics.

When to use it

When inter-departmental conflict seems disproportionate to the actual disagreements; when organizational politics follows group lines rather than issue lines; when 'us vs. them' dynamics are consuming energy; when designing organizational structures that need to balance team cohesion with cross-team collaboration.

How it can help

Recognize tribal dynamics operating in your organization and design around them. Departments become tribes (engineering vs. sales). Management levels become tribes (executives vs. front-line). Offices become tribes (HQ vs. remote). The symptoms: 'us vs. them' language, information hoarding between groups, attribution of negative motives to the out-group. The intervention: create shared identity that transcends sub-tribes (company mission), force collaboration across tribal boundaries (cross-functional projects), and ensure leadership represents multiple tribes. You can't eliminate tribalism—but you can shape which tribes form and how they interact.
