Curiosity Tendency

Charlie Munger's recognition of curiosity as a fundamental psychological drive that produces disproportionate learning and advantage when cultivated—and disproportionate ignorance when absent. Curiosity drives: exploration of adjacent fields (cross-domain learning), investigation beyond the obvious (finding hidden causes), and sustained engagement with complexity (not settling for simple answers). Munger and Buffett both attribute much of their investment success to insatiable curiosity that drove them to understand businesses, industries, and mental models far beyond what their immediate work required. Curiosity is the engine of the latticework of mental models: without it, the lattice never expands.

When to use it

When learning has become narrow and domain-specific; when the latticework of mental models needs expansion through cross-domain exploration; when innovation requires exposure to ideas from unfamiliar domains; when understanding why some people continuously learn and grow while others plateau.

How it can help

Cultivate curiosity deliberately rather than waiting for it to arise naturally. The practices: (1) Read widely outside your domain—cross-domain reading is where the most valuable connections form. (2) Ask 'why?' at least three levels deep on any important topic. (3) Follow interests even when they seem impractical—the most valuable knowledge often comes from unexpected connections. (4) Create environments that stimulate curiosity: diverse social circles, novel experiences, exposure to unfamiliar domains. For organizations: reward and protect curiosity-driven exploration, because the most valuable innovations come from curious people pursuing unexpected connections.
