Protect Yourself From Bad Advice.

Munger's meta-principle about filtering the influence of others' advice: most advice is self-interested, uninformed, or both—and accepting bad advice can be more costly than making your own mistakes. Sources of bad advice: (1) Professionals whose income depends on you taking action (surgeons recommend surgery, brokers recommend trades). (2) People with different risk profiles or circumstances giving advice as if your situation matches theirs. (3) Confident people with poor track records. (4) People who've succeeded through luck giving advice as if they succeeded through skill. Protecting yourself requires a FILTER—not rejecting all advice, but evaluating the advisor's incentives, track record, and relevance to your specific situation.

When to use it

When evaluating advice from professionals whose income depends on your compliance; when confident advice-givers may lack relevant expertise; when the advisor's incentives may not align with your interests; when building a personal advisory filter that separates signal from noise.

How it can help

Before accepting any advice: evaluate the ADVISOR, not just the advice. The questions: (1) What are their incentives? Do they benefit financially from me following this advice? (2) What's their track record in THIS specific domain? (3) Is their situation similar enough to mine that their experience transfers? (4) Would they give the same advice if they had no personal stake? The practice: weight advice by the advisor's believability (Dalio's concept) and relevance, not by their confidence or status. Seek advisors who have succeeded in situations similar to yours and whose incentives align with your outcomes.
