Reason-Respecting Tendency
People are much more likely to comply with requests when given a reason, even if the reason is trivial or circular. Ellen Langer's famous copy machine study showed that 'Excuse me, can I use the copier because I need to make copies?' was nearly as effective as a genuine reason. Humans have a deep need for explanations and justifications—providing any reason activates an automatic compliance response.
When to use it
When requesting anything from others—always provide a reason. When designing change management communications. When compliance is low despite clear benefits. When you need quick buy-in.
How it can help
Transforms communication effectiveness. Adding 'because' to requests dramatically increases compliance. Helps leaders understand that people need reasons to change behavior, adopt new tools, or follow new processes—and that providing reasons, even simple ones, is far more effective than mandating compliance.
