Stress-Influence Tendency

Munger's observation that stress dramatically alters cognitive function—producing both degraded performance (decision quality drops, cognitive flexibility decreases, tunnel vision increases) AND heightened susceptibility to influence (stress makes people more compliant with authority, more conformist, and more likely to follow social proof). Under stress: the brain shifts from deliberative processing (System 2) to reactive processing (System 1), producing faster but lower-quality decisions. Cults and high-pressure sales environments deliberately induce stress because stressed people are easier to manipulate. Seligman's learned helplessness research showed that sustained stress can produce complete surrender of agency.

When to use it

When decision-making quality deteriorates under pressure; when high-pressure situations are being exploited for influence; when organizational crisis management needs to protect decision quality; when understanding why people make commitments under stress that they wouldn't make otherwise.

How it can help

Design for stress by building decision processes that function well DESPITE cognitive degradation. The practices: (1) Never make important decisions under acute stress—build in mandatory cooling-off periods. (2) Pre-commit to decision criteria before stress hits (checklists, protocols, pre-defined rules). (3) Recognize when you or others are being influenced under stress—any persuasion attempt during high stress should trigger skepticism. (4) Build organizational systems that prevent high-stakes decisions during crisis mode without proper deliberation. (5) Manage chronic stress proactively—sustained stress degrades ALL cognitive function.
