Peak Performance Curve (Yerkes-Dodson Law)
The empirical finding that performance follows an inverted-U relationship with arousal: too little arousal produces lethargy and poor performance, optimal arousal produces peak performance, and too much arousal produces anxiety and performance collapse. The optimal arousal level varies by task complexity: simple tasks benefit from high arousal (adrenaline helps with straightforward physical tasks), while complex tasks require lower arousal (anxiety impairs creative and analytical thinking). This means the same person needs DIFFERENT stress levels for different types of work—high energy for execution, calm focus for strategy.
When to use it
When high-pressure environments are degrading complex cognitive performance; when low-energy environments are producing insufficient motivation for straightforward tasks; when designing work environments and need to match arousal to task requirements; when individual performance is inconsistent and the variable might be arousal level rather than capability.
How it can help
Match arousal level to task type. For complex, creative, or analytical work: reduce arousal through calm environments, adequate time, and low pressure. For simple, repetitive, or physical work: increase arousal through deadlines, competition, or environmental energy. The most common organizational error: applying high-arousal conditions (tight deadlines, competitive pressure, urgency) to complex cognitive work—which degrades the very performance it's trying to enhance. Design your environment: mornings of quiet deep work, afternoons of energized execution. Calibrate meeting energy to whether the goal is creative exploration (low arousal) or decisive action (moderate arousal).
