Domain Dependence
The failure to apply lessons learned in one domain to structurally identical situations in another domain. A person who understands probability perfectly in poker may completely ignore it when investing. An executive who practices evidence-based decision-making at work may rely on anecdotes for health decisions. Taleb emphasizes that humans compartmentalize knowledge: we fail to recognize that the same abstract principle (e.g., base rate neglect) applies across domains because the surface features are different. Domain dependence is why smart people make basic errors—they've learned the lesson but can't transfer it.
When to use it
When you notice yourself compartmentalizing knowledge (applying different standards of evidence in different areas of life); when solving a problem feels stuck (the solution may exist in an analogous domain); when teaching or learning—explicitly naming the abstract principle enables cross-domain transfer; when smart people make surprisingly basic errors in domains outside their expertise.
How it can help
When you learn a principle in one domain, deliberately ask: where else does this apply? The mental models approach is specifically designed to combat domain dependence—by abstracting principles from their original domains (physics, biology, economics, psychology) and applying them broadly. Practice translation: when you see a problem in business, ask 'what would this look like in biology?' When you see a relationship pattern, ask 'what would this look like in economics?' Cross-domain transfer is the highest-leverage thinking skill and the rarest.
