Technology Adoption Lifecycle
The technology adoption lifecycle uses idealized categories of relative adoption timing, drawing on Rogers's diffusion work. Actual populations may show different patterns, and a person's timing depends on circumstances. Moore's chasm is a particular technology-market strategy account, not a universal stage where most innovations necessarily fail.
Adoption timing describes a relationship between an innovation, a population, and a period. Someone can adopt one tool early and another late because need, access, cost, or compatibility differ. The familiar categories summarize relative timing; they should not become fixed character judgments or substitutes for asking why a person chooses an option.
Distinguish adoption per period from cumulative adoption, and examine whether the observed pattern actually resembles the idealized curve. A stalled transition may reveal missing support or an unsuitable offer rather than a mandatory chasm. Use the model to investigate differences among user circumstances, not to assume every group needs a prescribed sales message.
When to use it
When go-to-market strategy needs to match the current adoption stage; when the chasm between Early Adopters and Early Majority threatens adoption stall; when different customer segments require different value propositions; when understanding why initial traction doesn't automatically produce mainstream adoption.
How it can help
Compare the actual requirements of different user groups and investigate why an offering is adopted, adapted, declined, or discontinued. Tailor support to observed needs rather than assuming early users need vision and later users need proof.
