Geoffrey West's discovery that cities follow universal scaling laws: as a city doubles in population, innovation, wealth, and social interaction increase by approximately 15% (superlinear scaling), while infrastructure needs increase by only 85% (sublinear scaling). But pathologies—crime, disease, pollution—also scale superlinearly. The pace of life literally accelerates: walking speed, transaction speed, and information flow all increase predictably with city size. Cities are the most productive human invention because scaling laws favor agglomeration.
