Decision Decomposition (Break Complex Decisions into Parts)

The practice of breaking a large, overwhelming decision into smaller, more manageable sub-decisions that can be analyzed independently. A career change becomes: Am I unhappy? What specifically causes that? What would I need to change? What are my options? What's each option's expected outcome? Decomposition reduces cognitive load, reveals which sub-decisions are actually driving the overall decision, and often reveals that the 'big decision' depends on just one or two key uncertainties.

When to use it

When facing strategic decisions under uncertainty; when multiple stakeholders have competing interests; when the stakes are high and reversibility is low.

How it can help

Provides frameworks for navigating competitive landscapes, allocating resources under uncertainty, and making high-stakes decisions with incomplete information.
