Minimax Regret

A decision strategy that minimizes the maximum regret you could experience—where regret is the difference between the outcome of your choice and the best outcome you could have achieved. Unlike maximin (which focuses on absolute worst case), minimax regret accounts for opportunity cost. This produces less conservative decisions than maximin while still protecting against painful 'what-if' scenarios. Particularly useful when you value peace of mind alongside outcomes.

When to use it

When facing strategic decisions under uncertainty; when multiple stakeholders have competing interests; when the stakes are high and reversibility is low.

How it can help

Provides frameworks for navigating competitive landscapes, allocating resources under uncertainty, and making high-stakes decisions with incomplete information.
