Option Value (Real Options Thinking)
The insight that having the right but not the obligation to take future action has quantifiable value—borrowed from financial options theory and applied to strategy. Investments that preserve optionality (keeping doors open, maintaining flexibility) are worth more than their immediate payoff suggests. Real options thinking argues against premature commitment and for investments that create future choices, even if those investments seem inefficient by traditional NPV analysis.
