Portfolio Instead of Pick
When uncertainty can't be reduced, run several differentiated bets instead of forcing one choice.
Every January you and your partner half-plan the same fantasy: sell the second car, buy a camper van, spend summers on the road. Every February it dissolves, because the fantasy is all-or-nothing and neither of you knows whether you would actually enjoy week three of van life, when the novelty is gone and the shower situation is real.
Pilot is one of the framework's option forms, meaning a commitment structure an option can take: run a bounded, real version of the choice with explicit success and stop conditions set in advance. The cue for reaching for it is a candidate whose appeal is untested against reality. Build it in three parts: make the trial real, not simulated (rent a van for three weeks in shoulder season, not a weekend at a nearby campground), write the success condition first (we both want to extend by the end), and write the stop condition too (if we are miserable by day ten, we drive home and the dream retires with honor). What visibly changes is that a recurring fantasy becomes a scheduled experiment with a verdict date. A pilot is the wrong form when no bounded version can capture the essence of the real thing, or when the choice is already cheap to reverse outright.
