Wait for a Signal
Delaying is only a real option when you name the signal you're waiting for, a deadline, and the action it triggers.
Every credible voice tells you a different skill will matter most in five years: one says AI fluency, another says management, a third says writing in public. You have been trying to pick the winner for months, and every article you read reshuffles the ranking. The uncertainty is not shrinking because nobody, including the experts, actually knows.
Portfolio Instead of Pick applies when uncertainty is irreducible: instead of forcing one choice, run several differentiated bets at once. The cue is a decision you keep re-litigating because no amount of research settles which future arrives. Run it in three steps: check that your candidates are genuinely differentiated, meaning they win in different futures rather than being variants of one bet; size each bet so the portfolio fits your real capacity (four hours a week on AI tools, one management stretch assignment, one public post a month); and set a review date to shift weight toward whichever bet reality starts rewarding. What visibly changes is that the agonizing stops, because you no longer need to be right about the future, only positioned across it. Do not use a portfolio when evidence could actually settle the question cheaply, or when splitting your effort leaves every bet below the threshold where it can pay off.
