Ask the Missing Expert

Name the competence your system lacks and ask one scoped question of a qualified source.

You have spent three months teaching yourself Portuguese with an app, and your streak is impressive. But a native speaker friend winces at how you say certain vowels, and you realize every practice session may be drilling the same mispronunciation deeper. Nothing in your current setup can even hear the problem, let alone fix it.

This heuristic fires when a pivotal question depends on expertise, authority, or lived experience that is simply absent from your system. Run it in two steps: first name the missing competence precisely (someone who can diagnose pronunciation, not just another practice tool), then ask one scoped question of a qualified source, such as a single session with a language teacher focused only on what your mouth is doing wrong. Before trusting the answer, check credentials, incentives, and scope; expertise in one area is not authority over everything. What changes is that a blind spot you could not see from inside becomes a concrete fix, and your practice stops reinforcing the error. Stop once the expert has resolved the pivotal uncertainty or routed you to someone who can. Do not use this as an excuse to outsource the whole decision; the question is scoped, and the decision stays yours.
