Computation
Computation carries exact calculation, search, simulation, and monitoring at speed and scale no human matches.
Comparing two retirement contribution strategies in your head, you keep getting different answers depending on your mood. Compound growth across 25 years, tax treatment, employer match thresholds: the interactions are beyond mental arithmetic, and your gut keeps volunteering conclusions anyway, each delivered with confidence and no receipts.
COMPUTATION names calculation, search, transformation, simulation, comparison, and monitoring as a carrier space, the home for operations that reward exactness, speed, and scale no human matches. The cue to route work here is a task with explicit inputs and rules where precision matters: reconciling numbers, searching a large space of options, simulating scenarios, watching for a threshold. The operation: make the inputs and rules explicit (contribution levels, match formula, growth assumptions, time horizon), hand the grinding to a calculator, spreadsheet, or scenario tool, and have it return outputs you can inspect, including how sensitive the answer is to your assumptions. What visibly changes is that the argument with yourself ends: the strategies produce concrete projected differences, and your judgment gets spent on what the numbers mean for your actual life rather than on generating them. The boundary is what computation cannot carry: meaning, values, consent, and novel interpretation. A simulation can tell you which strategy yields more at 65; it cannot tell you what tradeoff between present and future your family should want.
