Situated

The physical environment itself, through layout, cues, defaults, and triggers, can carry parts of your cognition.

Your watercolors live in a closet, inside a box, behind the vacuum. You genuinely love painting, and you have painted twice this year. The intention is intact; the walk to the closet, the unpacking, the clearing of table space is a toll you pay before every session, and most evenings the toll wins.

SITUATED names the physical environment itself, layout, cues, defaults, constraints, objects, locations, and workflow triggers, as a carrier of cognition. Instead of you remembering and deciding, the room does part of the work: what is visible gets considered, what is ready gets done, what is placed at the point of action gets triggered. The cue for routing work here is a recurring gap between what you intend and what the space makes convenient. The operation: identify the intended action, then restructure the environment so the action is staged rather than assembled, a protected table where materials stay open and ready, brushes visible, water jar in place, so a free 20 minutes can become painting with zero setup. Add cues where the action should fire, like the table sitting where you pass after dinner. What changes is that the behavior starts happening without an internal negotiation. The boundary: environment can only carry simple, repeatable prompts and defaults; judgment does not live in furniture, and a space packed with too many cues becomes noise that carries nothing.
