Set Stop

Before you start, name the dose, the worsening threshold that ends the attempt, the reopening condition, and where you'll route next.

A foul mood has been sitting on you all evening, and you decide a run will shake it loose. Fine, but you know your own history: runs like this either fizzle at the driveway or turn into punishing 90-minute sessions that leave your knee aching for a week.

SETSTOP asks you to name four things before you start, not after. The dose: tonight, 20 minutes, easy pace. The worsening threshold that ends the attempt: if knee pain shows up or the mood gets darker instead of lighter, the run is over immediately, no negotiation mid-run when your judgment is worst. The reopening condition: if you bail, when does the attempt get another shot, say tomorrow at lunch, so quitting isn't just drift. The next route: if running fails, what you try instead, maybe calling a friend, so a failed support has somewhere to hand off rather than dead-ending into the couch. What changes: the experiment gets honest boundaries, and stopping becomes a planned outcome instead of a failure. The whole point is naming the lines while you're clear, because you won't set them well at mile four. Skip the formality only for genuinely trivial, self-limiting actions where overplanning costs more than it protects.
