Change the Field

If your thinking tracks the noise, light, interruptions, or pressure around you, change the environment once instead of demanding more self-control.

You and your spouse are trying to have the how-do-we-handle-your-mother conversation in the kitchen while the TV runs, a kid needs a snack, and both phones keep lighting up. Every attempt derails within two minutes, and you're both starting to conclude the other person is impossible to talk to.

Before blaming either brain, change the environment once. The cue: your ability to think or listen visibly tracks the noise, interruptions, crowding, or time pressure around you. The operation: name the environmental variable and what you expect it's blocking, in this case sustained attention to each other; change exactly one thing, such as moving to the porch after bedtime with phones in a drawer; keep any real danger or power imbalance in plain view rather than papering over it. Then retest: does the same conversation now hold together? When it works, the improvement is almost embarrassing, because the problem was the kitchen, not the marriage. If the same environmental fix is needed over and over, that's a structural problem to redesign, not a coping ritual to repeat. And never use this move to help anyone tolerate conditions that are actually unsafe or abusive.
