Build in margin, staged commitment, and rollback so a failed assumption doesn't sink the plan.

You're ready to quit your job for the meaningful work you've been circling for years. The current plan is a cliff dive: resign, burn the runway, find out. If your assumptions about the new field are wrong, and some will be, there's no margin to absorb the surprise and no road back.

Slack, Safety, and Reversibility protects a goal against uncertainty with four tools: margin (spare resources), staged commitment (small steps before big ones), optionality (kept alternatives), and rollback (a way to undo). The cue: a plan that only works if every assumption holds, or an irreversible move being made where a reversible one exists. Run it with the move question, how can we remain safe and able to change course if assumptions fail, then apply the tools: negotiate a sabbatical or go part-time before resigning outright, keep six months of cash untouched, define what evidence within 90 days would send you back or forward. What changes when it works: a failed assumption costs you a lesson instead of the whole plan, which also makes you braver about starting. The counterweight the spec insists on: delay destroys options too, so price the opportunity cost of caution rather than treating slack as free.
