Name the results and methods that no amount of upside can justify.

Mid-argument with your partner, you feel the temptation arrive: the old text thread you could weaponize, the threat to leave you don't mean, the withering comment that would win the exchange and poison the month. Nothing in your goal of "resolve this conflict" rules any of it out. Winning is still technically on the table by any means.

Unacceptable Outcomes and Means identifies the results and methods that no amount of upside can justify, and names them in advance. These are non-compensable red lines: no weighted total of gains elsewhere buys them back. The cue: a goal stated purely as upside, with pressure mounting and no forbidden list. Run it in two steps before the heat of the moment. First, ask the move question: what must never be traded away, and which means are forbidden? For conflict, the spec's example list is direct: no coercion, threats, surveillance, or humiliation to obtain agreement. Second, treat any red-line violation as automatic failure regardless of whether you "won." What changes: certain moves stop being options, which shrinks the decision space and, oddly, lowers the temperature. The safeguard cuts the other way too: don't elevate every preference into a moral absolute, or the forbidden list becomes a control mechanism.
