Trace to Value
Keep asking why the result matters until you hit the value that makes it worth pursuing at all.
Somewhere along the way, "save $1 million" became your finish line. You track it monthly, feel behind, and occasionally wonder why the number is one million and not seven hundred thousand or two. Truthfully, you picked it because it's round. What the money is actually for, the thing that would make any of it worth the grinding, has never been written down.
Trace to Value connects a desired result to the deeper value that makes it worth pursuing. The cue: you can state the target but stumble when asked why that amount, why that result, why now. The operation is a repeated question: why would that result matter, and why would that matter? For the million, the trace might run: resilience against a job loss, then time autonomy, then the freedom to choose work your family life can survive. When you land on something valuable in itself, you have found the true destination, and the original number becomes negotiable; maybe the real goal is funded at $600,000. What changes is that the target can now be right-sized to the value. Stop tracing before you reach empty abstractions like "happiness" or "success"; those words end thought rather than aim it.
