Advance Signal

Choose an early, controllable indicator that should move before the final result does.

You've automated $400 a month into savings, but the number you care about, annual net savings after all the leaks and splurges, won't be known until next January. Twelve months is a long time to fly blind. You need something that moves now and predicts then, or you'll discover in December that October quietly ate the plan.

Advance Signal means choosing an early, controllable indicator that should move before the final result does. The cue: your real outcome is slow or delayed, and you currently have no near-term way to tell whether you're on track. Run it in three steps. First, ask the move question: what near-term signal should move before the result? For savings, the completion rate of your automatic transfers, did every scheduled transfer actually clear this month, or did you pause one? Second, check it on a short cycle, monthly here. Third, and this is the step people skip, periodically recalibrate the leading signal against actual outcomes; when January's true number arrives, test whether transfer completion really predicted it. What changes: you can steer mid-year instead of grading a finished year. Don't lean on this move alone; an advance signal that never gets checked against results drifts into fiction.
