The goal aims in roughly the right direction but uses the wrong shape, horizon, or precision for how the result actually behaves.

You took up piano at 41 and set yourself one target: a flawless recital in June. The date is right, the direction is right, and the goal is still wrong, because a single high-stakes performance point is the wrong shape for a skill that grows through sustainable practice and gradual improvement. You are aiming a sniper rifle at something that behaves like weather.

Under this diagnostic, the problem is not where the goal points but its form: wrong shape, wrong horizon, wrong precision, or wrong commitment level for how the result actually behaves. Cues include assuming more is always better when diminishing returns are obvious, using an exact point where a range or trajectory would be more honest, expecting a short-term measure to capture a slow developmental result, or setting a performance target before you even know the mechanism. Ask the repair question: what form, geometry, horizon, and revision rule match how this result actually behaves? For the piano, that might mean a weekly practice band plus an improving-difficulty trajectory. When it works, the goal stops fighting reality's grain. Don't add mathematical sophistication for its own sake; pick the simplest architecture that changes a real decision.
