Acceptable region

A set of outcome combinations that all count as satisfactory because multiple configurations can serve the purpose.

House hunting is tearing your household apart because everyone is defending a different "perfect": your spouse wants the shortest commute, you want the workshop garage, the kids want their school district. Treating this as a hunt for one optimal house guarantees that every real listing loses to an imaginary one.

An acceptable region is a destination form for exactly this situation: instead of one point, you define a set of outcome combinations that all count as satisfactory, because multiple configurations can serve the purpose. Use it when many viable solutions exist, preferences differ, or exact optimization is fragile. To build one: name the dimensions that define the region (monthly cost, commute, space, school access, repair exposure); set hard exclusions and vetoes (nothing in a flood zone); put bounds where they matter (commute under 40 minutes, payment under a third of income); state the permitted tradeoffs; and agree on a procedure for choosing among houses that qualify. What changes: the search flips from "find the best" to "find any member of the good set," which is dramatically faster and less contentious. The failure mode to avoid: drawing the region so broadly that almost anything qualifies, or burying a real values conflict inside a composite score nobody actually accepted.
