Install a Ceiling Cap
When effort or polish expands without a natural stopping point, choose a maximum for one cycle. Decide where the remaining capacity should go, and what evidence could justify revisiting the cap.
Name the overdrawn resource → cap this cycle → redirect → review.
A ceiling limits something whose continued expansion may crowd out other valued outcomes: revision time, commitments, spending, or scheduled activity. Set a justified provisional maximum, preserve necessary quality, and choose what happens at the boundary. A maximum is permission to use up to that amount, not a target to consume it all.
Try this when…
There is always one more round of polishing.
I keep saying yes because I still have some capacity.
Stopping feels lazy even when the extra work adds little.
This one goal uses every hour I leave unclaimed.
What you can use it for
Limit expanding work
Prevent revisions or preparation from absorbing an unlimited share of capacity.
Protect room for other aims
Set a concentration limit before one activity displaces everything else.
Make stopping concrete
Connect a boundary to a next choice instead of relying on willpower.
