Sacred Activity Check
Scoring can support an activity—or interrupt the reason you value it. Ask whether more measurement helps participation, then protect the conditions that let the experience matter without requiring it to perform for a score.
Name the intrinsic good → test the measurement → protect participation.
Sacred Activity Check asks whether an activity's value occurs in doing it: play, conversation, making, reading, or shared presence. Examine whether scoring supports that value or crowds it out. Keep useful structure for access, memory, participation, or skill; remove unnecessary performance demands when the person endorses that change. Less measurement is not automatically better.
Try this when…
I'm evaluating the experience while I'm supposed to be having it.
This used to be enjoyable before it became a streak.
Does every conversation need an outcome score?
I want structure that helps me return without turning the activity into a contest.
What you can use it for
Protect intrinsic participation
Let an activity matter without inventing an external productivity payoff.
Separate support from scoring
Keep schedules, reminders, or practical records when they help people take part.
Review optimization pressure
Notice when comparison changes attention or behavior in an unwanted way.
