The Goldilocks Band

An exact target can turn nearly equivalent outcomes into success and failure. Draw a workable zone between too little and too much, then decide which boundary crossings would actually require attention.

Too little | workable | too much → meaningful edges → review drift.

The Goldilocks Band expresses success as an acceptable interval when both extremes are undesirable. Put an observable reason at each edge, allow ordinary variation within the band, and notice persistent movement toward a boundary. The range is provisional when evidence is thin; it should guide a choice rather than create decorative precision.

Try this when…

One missed session makes a good week look like failure.

Too much of this creates a different problem.

The exact number seems arbitrary.

We've made the range so broad that everything passes.

What you can use it for

Allow useful variation

Replace brittle quotas when nearby outcomes serve the same purpose.

Balance competing needs

Represent a quantity that has costs at both extremes.

Clarify boundary responses

Specify when drift deserves review without reacting to every fluctuation.
