The Minimum Viable Win

A distant ambition may be too large to tell you what should happen next. Define the smallest real result that would inform the next decision, make it observable, and give it a near-term horizon.

Big ambition → smallest real result → visible by when → next decision.

The Minimum Viable Win makes a grand destination answerable to an early result. Ask what small outcome would provide meaningful contact with reality or inform whether to expand, revise, or stop. It must benefit the intended person or reveal the relevant mechanism enough to update a choice. One small success does not prove general efficacy.

Try this when…

Nothing small feels as though it counts toward this ambition.

We keep producing plans without a real result.

What first outcome would justify taking the next step?

The goal is too distant to challenge anything we're doing now.

What you can use it for

Make ambition testable sooner

Choose a near-term outcome that could change the direction of a larger pursuit.

Distinguish artifacts from benefits

Require a real use or changed state rather than a ceremonial completion.

Guide staged expansion

Define what a modest success and failure would mean for the next decision.
