The Sacrifice Budget
'Whatever it takes' leaves costs free to grow. Give one cycle explicit limits for the resources you can trade, and identify the scarce resource whose limit requires redesign rather than compensation elsewhere.
Price the cycle → separate red lines → circle the least replaceable cost.
The Sacrifice Budget states what you are willing to spend in time, money, effort, inconvenience, and forgone opportunities for a defined pursuit. Keep each dimension visible and identify the least replaceable resource. Rights, consent, and serious safety constraints sit outside the budget. A cheaper result cannot purchase permission to violate them.
Try this when…
The costs keep expanding in small invisible pieces.
We know the hoped-for gain but haven't priced the pursuit.
Money is available, but time is the real limit.
What exactly are we willing to give up for this cycle?
What you can use it for
Bound a demanding project
Price the total pursuit, including preparation and follow-up.
Expose opportunity costs
Name the valued activity displaced by this commitment.
Negotiate shared burden
Make accepted costs explicit before one person silently absorbs them.
