Pareto frontier or partial order

Keep the set of non-dominated options and refuse to collapse plural values into one fake score.

Three finalist vacations sit on the family whiteboard, and someone proposes settling it with a weighted scorecard: novelty times three, cost times two, add it up. Everyone senses the trick. Whoever sets the weights wins, and the math is just their preference wearing a lab coat.

A Pareto frontier or partial order is the reference shape that refuses the fake score. It keeps the set of non-dominated options, where no option can improve on one valued dimension without worsening another, and declines to collapse plural values into a single number. Use it when objectives are genuinely plural and tradeoffs are contested. Run it in two moves. First, compare the trips on novelty, restoration, cost, transit burden, and accessibility, and discard any option that's worse than another on every dimension; dominated options waste everyone's argument. Second, present the survivors honestly: the beach trip trades novelty for deep rest, the city trip the reverse. What changes: the argument shrinks to the real value question, and nobody gets steamrolled by arithmetic. The spec's caution: the frontier does not choose for you. It narrows the set; the family still needs a legitimate way to pick among genuinely incomparable options. Skip this machinery when one option dominates or the stakes don't warrant it.
