Memory writes a flattering monthly summary; the transaction log wrote down what actually happened, one purchase at a time.

Record or artifact audit is the contact move of reconciling the existing records, logs, messages, transactions, statements, or drafts, against each other and against the story being told, to see what actually happened. Unlike asking people or running experiments, this evidence already exists; the work is reading it honestly. The cue is a disagreement between an account (yours or anyone's) and reality's paper trail, or a recurring surprise like a balance that keeps coming in low. The operation: pull the artifacts (bank and card statements for the month), reconcile them against your narrative line by line, and flag the divergences: 14 small food-delivery charges your "one dinner" story had entirely erased. Then let the record, not the memory, define what happened. What changes is that fixes target real behavior, the 11pm ordering habit, instead of the remembered one. Auditing is wasted effort when the records themselves are too incomplete or corrupted to bear weight; check their coverage first.
