Measure the same thing repeatedly over time so you can tell real change from normal fluctuation.
Two months into a running program, yesterday's easy loop felt terrible, and you're ready to conclude the training plan stopped working. One slow Tuesday is doing the judging. But your pace bounces around with sleep, heat, and stress on any given day, and a single reading can't tell a bad day from a real decline.
The move is to measure the same thing repeatedly over time so you can separate stable signal from fluctuation, cycles, trends, and delay. The cue is catching yourself drawing a conclusion from one measurement of something that naturally wobbles. Steps: fix the conditions (same route, same time of day), log the number weekly, then look at the shape of the series rather than the latest point: is there a trend under the noise, a weekly cycle, a lag between training load and adaptation? When it works, panic about one session gives way to a visible three-week trend you can actually act on, like adding a rest day. Don't use it when a single reading is genuinely decisive or the quantity doesn't fluctuate; waiting eight weeks to "confirm a trend" in something stable just delays the obvious.
