Wait-and-monitor trigger

Instead of probing now, name the exact signal, deadline, and response that will trigger action later.

Your father is 78, lives alone, and insists he's fine. Every Sunday call ends with you privately re-litigating the same question: is it time to push for help? You could interrogate him weekly or fly out to inspect the fridge, but mostly you just carry the worry around.

The move is to skip probing now and instead name, in advance, the exact signal, deadline, and response that will trigger action later. The cue is an uncertainty that doesn't need resolving today but will need action someday. Steps: pick observable signals (a fall, unpaid bills piling up, weight loss at his checkup), set a review deadline (his March physical, regardless of signals), and pre-commit the response (a family conversation about in-home help, already scripted). Write it down so future-you can't renegotiate. When it works, free-floating dread becomes a tripwire: you stop re-deciding every Sunday because the decision is parked, armed, and specific. Don't use it when the signal would arrive too late to act on, or when a probe right now is cheap and kind; waiting is only wise when the trigger fires in time.
