Genuine improvement
Find out whether the thing you actually value improved, not just a proxy score or a temporary appearance.
Since starting weekly date nights, you and your partner argue far less, and you've been citing that number as proof things are better. One evening a quieter possibility surfaces: maybe you argue less because you talk less. The metric improved. Whether the marriage improved is a separate question you haven't actually asked.
Genuine improvement is the evidence job of finding out whether the thing you actually value got better, rather than a proxy score, a surface appearance, or a short-lived bump. Proxies drift away from what they stand for, especially once you start managing to them. The cue is celebrating a number while a small voice notes that the underlying thing feels unchanged. The operation: name the true target (feeling close, wanting to bring each other news), ask how it would show up directly (unprompted conversations, physical affection, whether hard topics get raised or buried), and check those signs, including the awkward direct question to your partner. Then check durability: is this a real shift or a honeymoon effect of novelty? What changes is that you stop steering by a gauge that came unhooked from the engine. This job matters less when the metric is the thing itself, like debt actually paid off.
