Scoreboard Hijack
A hypothesis that proxy-directed behavior is improving the measure while the real mission outcome diverges.
Ten thousand steps, every day, for eight months; your watch celebrates you nightly. Yet at your physical, your resting heart rate is unchanged and you are winded on two flights of stairs. You have been pacing your apartment at 11pm to close the ring. The number went up. The fitness did not follow.
As a diagnostic card, Scoreboard Hijack is the hypothesis that proxy-directed behavior is improving the measure while the real mission outcome diverges. To use it, force it to predict. If the hijack is running, effort should have migrated toward the cheapest step sources (flat late-night pacing) and away from expensive ones (hills, intensity), and any outcome measure that bypasses the watch, heart rate, stair test, bloodwork, should be flat while steps climb. The strongest rival: the proxy is fine and the outcome is just slow, with fitness gains still in the pipeline. The distinguishing observation: hold steps constant but shift a third of them to genuinely elevated-heart-rate walking for six weeks, then re-test; if the outcome moves while the proxy stays flat, the proxy was the problem. If confirmed, the fix is changing what you count, minutes above heart-rate threshold, not counting harder. The trap is scrapping a decent proxy over one noisy outcome reading.
