Refine the signal
Replace or clean up a noisy, distorted, or proxy-corrupted measurement.
Revenue says things are great, and revenue is how you judge your freelance business. But it lumps together a thriving service line, a break-even one, and a big client who pays well while consuming so many revision cycles you likely lose money on them. One number is averaging three different stories into mush.
Refine the signal replaces or cleans up a noisy, distorted, or proxy-corrupted measurement. The cue: a measure you already watch that keeps leading to conclusions reality later contradicts, or that blends unlike things into one flattering average. Steps: interrogate the current signal, asking what it hides, averages away, or rewards gaming of; redesign it, here splitting revenue into profit per client after tracking actual hours; then run old and new signals side by side for a cycle to see where they disagree, because the disagreements are exactly where you have been misled. The visible change: decisions flip, the "great" client gets repriced or dropped, and effort moves to the line that actually earns. Don't refine endlessly; a signal only needs to be clean enough to pick the right action, and polishing metrics can become its own form of procrastination.
