Encode the setpoint or band
Install an explicit acceptable range with defined responses when you drift above or below it.
Some weeks you work 65 hours and hit a wall; then, chastened, you coast at 30 and fall behind, then panic back up to 60. You have never actually decided what a right-sized work week is. So every week gets negotiated from scratch, against deadlines, guilt, and whoever emailed last.
Encode the setpoint or band installs an explicit acceptable range with defined responses when you drift above or below it. The cue: a quantity you constantly adjust by feel, swinging around a target you have never stated. Steps: choose the band deliberately, say 42 to 50 hours, based on what you are optimizing for rather than what this week demands; write the responses at both edges, where above 50 means declining or deferring something specific next week, and below 42 means pulling a priority forward; then track weekly against the band so drift triggers the pre-agreed response instead of a fresh internal debate. The visible change: the exhausting weekly negotiation disappears, and the swings dampen because corrections start early and small. Don't encode a band around an unexamined number, and revisit it when life changes; a setpoint from your childless years enforced during a newborn's first month is a rule outliving its reason.
