Continuum
Puts one quality on a single axis, so a thing argued about as two camps becomes a position, a distance, and a threshold.
You and your housemate have had the kitchen argument nine times. The words never change. You are messy, they are impossible. Both of those are labels, and a label has only two settings, on and off. So every round has to be fought at full strength, and nine rounds later neither of you has moved an inch.
Continuum takes one quality and lays it along a single axis. It needs three things: two ends you can describe in something a person could observe, a direction between them, and somewhere to put the things you care about. Once the axis exists, three questions become answerable that the labels could not answer. Where does each thing actually sit. How far apart are they. And is there a point along the axis where behavior changes.
It has five common renderers. A spectrum names the two poles and places things between them with no numbers, so you get order and rough distance and nothing false. A number line adds a unit, so distance means something you can measure and a threshold has a value. A ladder replaces smooth position with named rungs in order, which fits things that come in recognizable levels. A maturity scale is a ladder whose rungs are named by what you can do at each one, so you can place yourself without being told. A gradient band drops the ticks on purpose, to show that the change is smooth and any cut you make is yours.
Reach for it when an argument has hardened into two camps, or when a word you lean on turns out to cover a range you have never named. It is weak wherever the thing is not one quality. Two qualities forced onto one axis make a score that hides the trade inside it. And a position carries no cause. A continuum can show you that your afternoon alertness falls smoothly from 1:30 and never once tell you why.
