Measure how fast something is changing and in which direction, not where it currently stands. A low score climbing steadily is a different problem than a high one sliding, though a single snapshot scores them the same.

Example

Instead of rating your partner a 4 out of 10 on support, you chart the last six months: a 2 in March, a 5 now. The level still looks bad, but the slope says the trouble is already correcting itself.
